چکیده

Dear Editor, Filaria is a common problem in India. The infection is seen endemically in the coastal regions especially around Orissa and Bihar. 1 Incidental filariasis has previously been described in cytology smears from a wide variety of sites 1 and its presence in a bone mar aspirate was described as early as 1976. association with hematologic malignancies is limited to only an occasional case report. 3 We are describing three cases of filaria infection detected first when the patients were investigated for a suspected hematologic disorder. Case 1 A 41 year old male presented with complaints of weakness and easy fatiguablity for one year with fever for 1 month and petechial rash for 15 days. On examination, he was pale, febrile with a just palpable spleen. There was no lymphadenopathy or hepatomegaly. His hemoglobin was 12 g/dl, total leucocyte count was 98.6X10 9 /L with a platelet count of 56X10 9 /L. Differential leukocyte co peripheral smear showed 94% blasts and a bone marrow examination was advised. The bone marrow smears showed 95% blasts which were negative for Myeloperoxidase (MPO), Sudan Black (SB), Periodic acid schiff (PAS). An occasional microfilaria was identified on the SB stained slide which was sheathed with a free cephalic space and tail tip free of nuclei. On the basis of these findings, the species was identified as Wuchereria bancrofti (Figure 1 immunophenotyping, the blasts were positive for

Genome-wide significant associations for variants with minor allele frequency of 5% or less--an overview: A HuGE review.

The authors survey uncommon variants (minor allele frequency, ≤5%) that have reached genome-wide significance (P ≤ 10⁻⁷) in genome-wide association study(ies) (GWAS). They examine the typical effect sizes of these associations; whether they have arisen in multiple GWAS on the same phenotype; and whether they pertain to genetic loci that have other variants discovered through GWAS, perceived bio...

Intrahepatic ascariasis – Common parasite at an uncommon site

Biliary infections and biliary cholangitis are common terms used to define infections of the biliary tree. Bacteria are the most common cause for these infections. Parasites can form an important group of biliary infections and act as causative agents or may predispose bacterial infections. Despite being an important cause, these infections are quite uncommon to find, especially in the intrahep...

Comprehensive Evaluation of the Association of APOE Genetic Variation with Plasma Lipoprotein Traits in U.S. Whites and African Blacks

Although common APOE genetic variation has a major influence on plasma LDL-cholesterol, its role in affecting HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides is not well established. Recent genome-wide association studies suggest that APOE also affects plasma variation in HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides. It is thus important to resequence the APOE gene to identify both common and uncommon variants that aff...

Experimental parasite community ecology: intraspecific variation in a large tapeworm affects community assembly.

Non-random species associations occur in naturally sampled parasite communities. The processes resulting in predictable community structure (e.g. particular host behaviours, cross-immunity, interspecific competition) could be affected by traits that vary within a parasite species, like growth or antigenicity. We experimentally infected three-spined sticklebacks with a large tapeworm (Schistocep...

Metazoan parasite species richness in Neotropical fishes: hotspots and the geography of biodiversity.

Although research on parasite biodiversity has intensified recently, there are signs that parasites remain an underestimated component of total biodiversity in many regions of the planet. To identify geographical hotspots of parasite diversity, we performed qualitative and quantitative analyses of the parasite-host associations in fishes from Latin America and the Caribbean, a region that inclu...

Island and taxon effects in parasitism revisited: avian malaria in the Lesser Antilles.

We identify and describe the distribution of 12 genetically distinct malaria parasite lineages over islands and hosts in four common passerine birds in the Lesser Antilles. Combined parasite prevalence demonstrates strong host effects, little or no island effect, and a significant host-times-island interaction, indicating independent outcomes of host-parasite infections among island populations...
